Teaching Your Daughter About Puberty

Ever since I found out I was going to have a little girl I have been nervous about talking to her about puberty and sex. I remember taking a puberty class when I was in girl scouts that taught me about anatomy and periods. I remember being split up into a boys and girls group in 5th grade and watching the sex education video. I also remember learning about sex education in health class throughout middle school and high school. And I learned about abstinence in youth group.

Even though I knew my mom was available to talk about these topics, we never had an open dialogue about the female body, periods, or sex. I don’t blame her—I doubt she and her mom talked about puberty or sex openly, so I’m sure she didn’t feel totally comfortable doing that with me. And at 13 years old, I was embarrassed to talk to my mom about those things. However, I want to change that pattern with my daughter.

I want my daughter to learn about the female body from me—not her friends or some video at school. I want to celebrate when her body starts to change and she gets her first period. I want her to come to me with questions instead of googling the answers (no telling what she would find these days). I want my daughter to be comfortable and confident in what God designed her body to do! But I still didn’t feel confident knowing when to talk to her, what to say, or how much to say.

Then one day I happened to be listening to a podcast that had the owner, Megan, of Body Talk Basics as the guest. I’ve had the chance to do the course and it’s exactly what I was wanting for my daughter and myself! It’s not just a video that a mother and daughter watch together. The course teaches:

  • her (and me) about how the female body works,

  • what happens to her body during puberty,

  • why we have periods,

  • products to use for periods,

  • experiments to do together,

  • provides plenty of opportunities for mothers and daughters to connect throughout the course through journaling and discussion

  • and more.

One other thing I really like about the course is that Megan provides extra handouts for things like healthy deodorants, skincare, or snacks.

I love that Megan was a middle school teacher, so she understands how girls around this age can become easily embarrassed by this subject. She speaks confidence into them by sharing that these changes are totally normal and incredible. She explains the body in easy to understand terms with pictures and diagrams. She has taken it a step further and provided moms and daughters the opportunity to connect and bond during this course which I so appreciate!

My daughter is only 7 years old right now, so I’ve been previewing the course to see what it teaches and when I want to introduce certain topics to her. I like that I can introduce her to a little at a time as she continues to grow instead of overwhelming or scaring her about what’s to come. I think this slow learning path will provide more opportunities for openness between the two of us.
