Safe Books for Children to Read
My children are avid readers! My daughter will walk down the stairs reading a book—I have to remind her that’s not the best idea. I’ve had to ban books in the kitchen because they will sit and read their books instead of eating. They read so much that we have to go to the library at least twice a week because they run out of books.
I’m not complaining! This is a great “problem” to have! I love that they enjoy reading! There are exponential benefits to reading, so I will gladly go to the library as many times as needed.
The problem though is finding good, wholesome books that are appropriate for children and align with our family values. I do not need an author trying to sneakily push their “woke” ideology on my children. Reading is supposed to be fun, enjoyable, encouraging, and a chance to learn new things. Children’s books should not be subjecting our children to grown up things, which, unfortunately many newer children’s book authors are trying to do.
Here are some of our favorite safe books
Many of the books are part of a series, so I only posted the first book of the series. These are in no particular order. Click on the book cover and it will take you Amazon where you can read the description.
I will admit that Harry Potter has a few curse words in each book, but the story is so amazing so I just crossed out the words/replaced them if needed.
Every new book my children pick out, I have to vet to make sure it’s “safe.” There are a couple of websites I use to check book content. I’ll share them in case you need them too:
commonsensemedia.org and pluggedin.com
If you have any wholesome, kid-friendly book recommendations please share them in the comments!
