You want to help your child be a successful student. You want to make sure they don’t fall behind during the summer, but it’s not always easy understanding what concepts they need to know. You try to look up topics or standards that they should master at their age, but let’s be honest, those standards are not written in layman’s terms. So how do you know what math skills to teach your child?

Math Standards

When creating the math workbooks, I used Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as a guideline to help understand what math skills are to be taught in each grade level. You might’ve just gasped when you read Common Core State Standards because there has been a lot of controversy around that term over the years. Let me explain a little bit about CCSS and why I chose to use it as a guideline for the math workbooks.

Many fear that CCSS is a way to control what every state teaches its students; however, that is not true. Each state has the option to choose whether they want to adopt CCSS or not. And if a state chooses to adopt CCSS then they simply use the CCSS as a blueprint to make sure basic skills are taught among all grade levels at different schools within the state. Each state and school district gets to choose how the standards are taught in the classroom (the textbooks that are used).

So, CCSS aren’t as bad as the rumors might have made them out to be. I chose to use CCSS as a guideline (in these books and The Ultimate Kindergarten Prep Guide) to help me understand what math skills children should master by the end of preschool, kindergarten, and first grade because a majority of states have adopted Common Core State Standards as their educational blueprint. This doesn’t mean that you are limited to only teaching your child the concepts in my math workbooks. I just wanted to offer you a helping hand on your journey to helping your child be successful.
